Experience

MY EXPERIENCE: I was able to graduate from Emerson a year early because the college accepted all of my AP credits. My AP exams and scores were as follows: -AP English Literature, 5 -AP U.S. Government & Politics, 5 -AP Psychology, 5 -AP English Language & Composition, 4 -AP U.S. History, 4 -AP World History, 4 -AP Comparative Government & Politics -AP Latin: Vergil, 3 I also received a score of 800 on the SAT Writing section and 740 on Critical Reading. While enrolled in AP English Language and Composition, I entered the National Council of Teachers of English Achievement Awards in Writing contest (which is open to every high school junior nationwide), and was one of 543 students to receive a Certificate for Superior Writing. I also took every English elective my high school offered (except journalism), including: -Independent Writing for Publication -Writing Fiction & Poetry -Literary Journeys -Global Literature As an AP U.S. Government & Politics and AP U.S. History student, I was also the Speaker of the House for my high school's Model Congress club. I ended up being selected as one of six students to be followed by a camera crew throughout a four day conference hosted by Rutgers University, where I played the part of a senator on the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions committee. I studied Latin for six years, which included my repeated participation in Stony Brook University's CERTAMEN (Latin Quiz Bowl), Declamatio (ancient poetry recitation contest), and the National Latin Exam, and culminated in the extremely difficult AP Latin: Vergil exam, which extensively tests knowledge of the grammar and translation of "The Aeneid." Some of the writing/literature courses I was enrolled in at Emerson included: -College Writing -Research Writing -Literary Studies -British Literature -American Women Writers -Native American Literature -The American Short Story -Cultural Criticism -Introductory, Intermediate, and Advanced Seminar Writing Workshops in Fiction -Introductory Writing Workshops in Nonfiction and Drama -Making it Strange: Fictions of Effect -Copyediting At Emerson I was elected by the student body to represent my department as Writing, Literature, and Publishing (WLP) Senator for the Student Government Association (SGA) for several consecutive terms. As WLP senator, SGA elected me to serve as the only student representative on the faculty's Undergraduate Curriculum Committee (UCC). At UCC's monthly meetings, we discussed and voted on course proposals and emendations; this experience edified my understanding of what teachers expect from students and the way courses are organized. I was also chosen as Fiction Editor of "The Writer's Block Anthology," a literary magazine that showcases student poetry, fiction, drama, and art. After college, I began doing freelance writing, editing, and transcription work. I briefly lived in DC, where I worked as a special projects consultant for the American Nurses Foundation (ANF). As such, I proofread countless materials for grammar and clarity, including annual reports and seasonal newsletters. WHY THIS QUALIFIES ME TO TUTOR YOUR STUDENT: I am extremely passionate about language and social sciences and understand that, as important as these fields of study are, they do not come to everyone easily. I love the written word and, as a previous camp counselor, swim instructor, and waitress, have extensive experience talking to and teaching students of all ages. My proudest moment as a tutor so far has been helping a student with learning disabilities raise his score on the NYS English Regents more than twenty points (from a failing grade to a high B) after approximately two months of working with him once/week. My mother is a tutor as well (and provides services in Math, which I do not), and the two of us are comfortable both traveling to you and tutoring at our home. Having taken so many high school electives, college courses, and entered multiple contests, I am comfortable with instructing students about how to tailor their writing to best fit the needs of a wide variety of genres, academic and otherwise. My years of studying Latin have both imbued me with an intense love of mythology and teaching through storytelling and a strong understanding of etymology, which is invaluable to the SAT Critical Reading section. I would love to teach your student the basics they need to succeed both on the SAT and when confronted with difficult diction in other parts of their lives.
